Portions of the Heart
Portions of the heart
how much will you give up
to gather more to you
place out a portion on the tracks
stick your head up from your hole
hoping a guillotine is not near
and won't come crashing down
cut off your silly fool's crown
young do it so much better
for all their fears they have fewer scars
have not descended into the hell
where your only thoughts are
thoughts of betrayal and lost
thoughts of the mental cost
however with experience
comes a perverse form of perservance
we believe if once found love
were valued and held close
then again we should manage
to reach that point of exchange
of love trust and loving
and so more readily
are we made fools of
charging at tilting windmills
ignoring instincts and safety
beyond the margins of sanity
we race an uncontrolled sleigh
on an icy always steep slope
till speed so much we cannot cope
and we crash and how we burn
to know all our experience
did not prevent it being our turn
at being fool and fooled
by love and colder hearts.
