I Should Have Known. A Poem

Why did I fall prey
To your words?
Why did I believe them?
I should have known
They were too good
To be true
I should have known
Yes, I should have known.

I guess when I look
In retrospect
I see that I was hopeful
That you could be the one
Who is not like the others
One who means what he says
One who isn't lying.
One who is sincere.
One who is authentic
Not wearing a facade
Of kindness and caring
When in reality
He is a wolf
In sheep's clothing.

Yes I should have known
But hope won out
I am the loser once again
It makes me want to
Stay away from all men.
So I don't get fooled
And hurt as has happened
Too many times
To mention.
